Historic Tintype Portrait Sessions at Maple Grove Cemetery, One Final Date: Saturday, October 3

Step back in time and have your portrait taken using 19th-century photographic methods. As part of her residency as Maple Grove’s 3rd Artist in Residence, Jolene Lupo is returning for one final afternoon of wet plate tintype portraits before her upcoming exhibition.

Because tintype photography requires specialized chemistry, a portable darkroom, and precise physical preparation, these studio setups are rare. If you missed our summer sessions, this is your final opportunity to take part in this historic process.

About the Experience

Tintype photography is far different from modern point-and-shoot digital images. Each photograph is handcrafted individually on a metal plate, yielding a unique, archival heir-loom portrait.

• Handcrafted Process: Every step—coating the plate, exposing it through a large-format camera, and developing it on-site—happens right before your eyes.

• A Slower Pace: Preparing the equipment, posing, and developing each plate takes time. We ask for a bit of patience during your hour slot; experiencing the deliberate, traditional pace is part of what makes the session so memorable.

• Exhibition Inclusion: Portraits created during this residency will be featured in a special upcoming exhibition at Maple Grove celebrating the history and craft of early photography.
